GAIN Railway Stakes 2018 A Great Success
The GAIN Railway Stakes took place on Saturday 30th June at the Curragh Racecourse in Co. Kildare.
Eight horses were declared for the Group. 2 contest making it a very competitive renewal. Tipperary trainer Aidan O’Brien declared three horses; North Wind, Van Beethoven and Land Force (withdrawn on the raceday due to being “off feed”). Other Irish trainers including Ger Lyons, Fozzy Stack and Mrs. Jessica Harrington also declared their chosen charges to take their chance in the race.
Great Britain were well represented with Mick Channon’s Certain Lad making the journey to the Curragh as well as Mark Johnston sending over the progressive Maria’s Diamond.
The Curragh looked fantastic, with the redevelopment really taking shape. Crowds thronged to the racecourse to enjoy a great days racing and there was a party atmosphere all around!
The GAIN Railway Stakes was a thrilling affair, with a fast early pace being set by North Wind. Halfway up the straight, things started to get heated with the main protagonists North Wind, Maria’s Diamond, Van Beethoven and Certain Lad all fighting it out in the finish.
In the end, it was Van Beethoven under Ryan Moore who emerged victorious with Maria’s Diamond only half a length behind in second place. Certain Lad and Highland Fortune took third and fourth respectively. It was a close affair with only five lengths covering the first four!
The winner was trained by Aidan O’Brien and owned by Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier and Michael Tabor. Van Beethoven was a popular winner, having been sent off favourite. It has been reported that the horse may go for the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes in August so he could be a future champion in the making!
