Dawn Approach banished the memory of losing in the Epsom Derby by winning a very competitive St. James’s Palace Stakes on the opening day of Royal Ascot. Dawn Approach won by a short head from Toronado in a thrilling race which also included a steward’s inquiry. Dawn Approach never settled in the early stages of the race but he ran on strong in the final furlongs to fight of stiff competition from  Toronado, at one stage they even hampered each other as both horses tried to revive their status after their poor performances in previous races which resulted in the steward’s inquiry. Mars who is trained by Aidan O’ Brien came in third.
