Silver Medals for Team Ireland Equestrian Pony Teams at European Championships
The Irish Pony teams had great success at the FEI Pony European Championships in Bishop Burton, UK last week.
In the Individual Showjumping discipline, Max Wachman took the silver medal riding Cuffesgrange Cavalidam. The pair were just outside the medal places coming into Sunday’s fourth round of jumping on a four fault total. They produced two foot-perfect clear rounds in the individual medal decider to rise onto the podium and took silver on an impressive five round total of just four faults. Sweden took the gold medal and Great Britain took bronze. To win a medal in such a competitive competition is a fantastic achievement for Team Ireland.
The Irish eventing squad took home some silverware as well. In the team competition, Ireland finished in the silver medal position finishing very strongly. The Irish team of Isabelle Comerford (Colour Me Fancy), Chloe Fagan (Fernhill Timbacktoo), Sophie Foyle (Little Miss Fernhill) and Harry Swan (Wilderwood Storm), led by team manager Becky Cullen, were in fourth place after the opening dressage phase. They moved into silver medal position after the cross country with all four Irish riders jumping clear. Ireland added just 8 penalties in the final show jumping phase to finish on a total of 107.5. The home team from Britain took Gold on 101.0, while France claimed the Bronze on 108.5.
The individual competition saw Sophie Foyle jump a brilliant final clear round to take the individual silver medal on a final score of 32.10. Britain claimed both the gold and bronze medals here. This result capped a brilliant weekend of results for the Irish eventing team.
Congratulations to all the medal winners and their connections!
